An old quarry used by a local sailing club (on one side), the fishing community on another, and local yoof on another. The lake ('lagoon' feels rather hyperbolic, TBH) is on private land, and the latter are clearly not welcome guests, judging by the number of 'anti social behaviour will not be tolerated, no drinking alcohol' signs, and the losing battle they are fighting against discarded bottles and cans.

The lake is pleasant enough, but it seems you can't (legally) enjoy it unless you do so through the sailing or fishing clubs.

I spent a couple hours waiting while my son was sailing with the Cubs, and tried to walk round the lake - I managed to get about three quarters of the way round (passing a large group of teenagers drinking spirits on the way), but got turned back by a fisherman who told me that there is a high fence separating the sailing and fishing 'sides' that I wouldn't be able to cross. Some nice views over the surrounding fields on the way, though.

This lake is set in beautiful surroundings although it has a checkered past. Once a quarry owned by Eddystone cement it was closed when the company was unable to purchase more land towards Letchworth ,who didn't want a quarry on their doorstep.
Many people have have used and enjoyed the pits although it has had its fair share of tragedies. Many problems started in more recent years when people from further afield started using the area. Local people had a lot more respect for the lagoon and knew its dangers.
I have fished, swam and walked around it many times and always felt it would make a great park if run correctly but unfortunatly it wasn’t and is now only used by a few privileged people.
Which I totally agree with as it keeps away the idiots of this world. I wonder if the present owner used to swim in there as a youngster as it was owned by Farmer Walker 🙂

Great lake...shame one cannot 'legally' walk around it but there are ways one can walk around it.

First visit as a novice scuba diver. A lovely location, the access road is a little bumpy in places, the site itself is really nice. Vis was patchy between 2 and 5 mtrs, saw a few fish, but didn't really look round as was just getting the feel of being in the water. Will definitely go back.

A smallish chalk pit, now flooded and home to the North Hertfordshire and East Bedfordshire Sailing Club. A nice spot.
