Beautiful, peaceful chapel with a long and interesting history that began in the 13th century. The thatched roof with timber framed construction, large tombs inside the chapel and attractive stained glass windows make this chapel worth visiting in its own right. It's also the best place to view the Bures Dragon on a nearby hillside, the story of which is told on the information board on the chapel grounds.

What a beautiful Chapel and I only visited to see the Bures Dragon.
It was well worth the 10 minute walk from the car park.
The stained glass has to be viewed from the inside to appreciate it.

Discovered this wonderful and beautiful 13th century church whilst out on a hike to come and see the dragon on the hillside. The church is a destination church too as such a hidden under-rated gem of a church as it is beautiful and full of history. Inside it is stunning with its unusual tombs etc.

When you read up about the chapel (which is really worth doing) there are all sorts of stories and then challenges to the stories. It is presumed it was originally a wooden structure like the 9th century wooden chapel at Greensted near Chipping Ongar. It is believed too that the current stone chapel was consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cardinal of Rome, Stephen Langton, on St Stephens Day 1218 (another article though denies this so who knows!).

Definitely worth going out of your way to visit this church.

A beautiful small chapel in the midst of the countryside - only accessible on foot. From the back of the chapel there is a lovely view of the Bures dragon.

Fantastic chapel loads of history what a find. If you in to churchs and history this is a must. Out the back of the church there is a bench a place for reflection. In the distance you can see the outline of The Bures Dragon in the field a myth in itself. There also a couple of interested items in the field out back.

I didn't hate this chapel. I loved it but, if we're rating churches on a five star system, this is a one star church. Only about 1,000 churches in England warrant any stars at all. This out of the way chapel is set on a beautiful hilltop and has some amazing de Vere tombs.
