I loved this hotel! A nostalgic blast from the past. Proper Alan Partridge/Shining vibes. Loved the decor, the bed was really comfy, great surroundings, bathroom big and shower worked well.|Breakfast buffet was the best I've laid eyes on in a while, great selection of classic items. Bar staff dead friendly

I agree with references in other reviews to Fawlty Towers and the Shining! Very much so, but this is more a compliment than a criticism. |Yes it’s very old fashioned and the rooms and exterior are in dire need of an update. But it’s clean and very very welcoming and the woods and walks in the grounds are incredible. ||I went with my dog and enjoyed sitting on the Chestefields in the reception area just watching the world go by in the evening Great people watching! ||I didn’t eat there. Had breakfast one morning but it wasn’t to my liking. Also I asked for a cappuccino and was told they don’t do ‘speciality coffee’. Maybe in 1978 a cappuccino was a speciality. Not 2025!||But the staff were incredible. And they had to be as there was only a handful of them who seemed to be there constantly One told me they’d done a 70 hour week due to understaffing. That’s inhumane. |The hotel was bought out in May and since then they haven’t had a general manager just an assistant manager. |Those staff must be exhausted. |Whoever has bought the place needs to pull their finger out and firstly, employ more staff. And secondly give a huge bonus to the ones you currently have that are keeping the place afloat. ||And then invest some money in cleaning the outside. Some areas were very tired and run down and grubby looking. |Which is a shame because the grounds are so beautiful. ||All in all, I loved my stay. I was only there 2 days so I could overlook some aspects mentioned. ||I normally prefer modern, boutique style. But this was a last minute booking and I’d say it was a serendipitous one! I’d possibly stay here again but I have to suspend my liking of modern facilities and I’d have to bring my own equipment to make my morning coffee!||So if you’re looking for modern comforts stay away. But if you can overlook them, you’ll experience a charming hotel that was once undoubtedly a luxury stay but is now in need of a the TLC that it’s wonderful , albeit tiny, quota of staff give to the guests.

Changed hands in March. The staff are friendly, the girl off the bar did a great quiz night! Sorry I don't no her name.
The young manager with the Scottish accent was pleasant to!
Rooms were clean, my only suggestion that through time they remove bath tubs and have walk in showers.
I was a bit mixed up during service for meals times on who was allocated to our table BUT each person who tended to us were pleasant.
The food could do with a bit more variety, but enjoyed our stay. Thank you

Stumbled upon this hotel for a one night stay on our way back down south from Scotland. We thought it would be quite Alan partridge but we were really pleasantly surprised to find a really great hotel. We had a comfortable stay in beautiful surroundings, complete with a place to watch red squirrels. Really nice, cosy rooms that had everything we needed and a great breakfast. Would love to stay again.

You should always keep an open mind when visiting these hotels. Yes, you can expect areas in need of modernisation, creaky floors, and average food. etc. |We went on a coach trip for one evening on a DBB deal. For what we paid I wasn't expecting luxury, the room was nice and clean with twin beds and firm mattresses. Sunday dinner in the evening was not the roast we were expecting and choices were few. Breakfast could be improved, for a few pounds more additional items could be added? In fact they are offering a Sunday deal for DBB for 2 for £99…!|The good features far outweigh the not so great .|The hotel is in a beautiful area with nice walks and we did spot red squirrels, 🐿️ get food at reception. This lovely hotel has lots of original features, a beautiful lounge area to chill, a nice bar and it's very relaxing. If you like modern it's not for you.

Quite a dated place but retains a charm from it if thats what you like. Staff friendly and helpful. Food freshly cooked. Free snooker table downstairs was enjoyable. The highlight is off course the wonderful red squirrels which can be seen within a 5 minute walk into the woodland next to hotel. Worth the visit for them alone.

Fantastic experience here at Shap Wells Hotel. Lovely little place to come and spend a few days away. Unfortunately the weather was not the best when I stayed, however I can imagine the walks through the forest would be nice on a sunny day. This dog-friendly hotel offers entertainment with a bar and meals on a night, and a games room for throughout the day. I would definitely recommend this place for a family.
