Cheaper than the rest but actually better. Journey time is only about an hour and ten minutes, and the fare - especially if you're taking a vehicle - is very reasonable. Recommended, and we'll definitely use them again.

Loading of our caravan could not have been made easier with the patience of the crew. Reversing a twin axle onto Pentalina would be a nightmare for some, but the crew take it gently, small hand signals, all done quietly. We have been in both vessels now with our caravan, total length of 42 feet car and caravan. Thanks to the crew.

Really impressed by how these guys run the ferries - always on time, & the staff are really friendly and polite. Highly recommend the lorne sausage & egg roll on board too!

Normally I would give this 5 stars. We travel to and from the island with our dog, and unfortunately the Pentalina is in service, which doesn't have the enclosed lounge for dogs and their owners, (as the Alfred does). The weather was kind on the outward journey, so we were able to sit on the uncovered deck. The return journey weather was inclement, so we had to leave our dog in the car. It was so much better when the Alfred was in service from the island!
This service is good value, but only in good weather, if you travel with a dog.
If you don't have a dog, happy days! Enjoy your journey. ☺️

Prompt service, clean and much less expensive than the Thurso Stromness ferry. It has three sailings compared to two from Thurso.

Fast getting on the ferry and easy with tickets etc and at the other end in Orkney. Some of the ferries are a bit dated like interiors πŸ—“οΈ

The last time I was in Orkney was to dive Scapa Flow and that was 20 years ago and back then I used to get the ferry from Scrabster-Stromness. However this time it was just a short holiday staying on South Ronaldsay so Google directed me here and I'm glad they did as it was cheaper and a shorter crossing.

Modern ferry with hot drinks and food available (try the cheese and mince patties - they're out of this world!) at a reasonable price considering you don't have any other options apart from bring your own.

If I had a niggle it's that it said on the website for the MV Pentalina that the dog area was outside on the upper deck (the website now does say that there is an indoor area) and my dog isn't as limber as she used to be so I ended up carrying her up and down but to be fair she will always be happier outside.

Will definitely use them again next time we visit.
