Travelled from Rapness to Kirkwall this morning and the loading crew were amazing! Despite me forgetting to add my bike rack to my already 6.95m length they went beyond their duties to help remove the rack so they could squeeze the last vehicle on - diagonally! Anyone would have understood if this had caused irritation, but no, they were friendly and professional throughout! Thank you to all the lovely gentlemen and I promise I will never forget to add my bike rack to my length again 😉

Very smooth sailing, the whole process was effortless when we arrived at the port to get loaded.

Also the food on board was reasonable and not over priced. Made for a nice breakfast while taking in the views of Orkney.

I have travelled as a tourist several times between Houton and Lyness. Very friendly and helpful staff, perfectly on schedule. If you travel by car in the holiday season, make sure you have a reservation. Reservations are easily made by a phonecall to the office. Local Orcadians advised me to ask for a booking reference with your reservation.

Even though these ferries are one of the only lifelines to the islands, the boats themselves are always breaking down, they stink and certain office staff can be rude on occasion. The boats need to be replaced, there is always the plane to the outer isles but the ferry is the cheapest and it shows.
