Small but striking ruined castle with red sandstone walls that really stand out in the evening sun. The oldest surviving parts of the castle date back to the 14th century.
The surroundings are quite overgrown but in winter the castle is accessible. It's around a 20 minute walk from the parking area at the end of the road just west of Wemyss Caves.
I wouldn't travel a long way just to see the castle as there are more impressive examples in the area, but with the caves along the same stretch of coastline it's worth a visit.

MacDuff Castle is easy to access from the central road along the coast. There is some parking available next to the cemetery where you pull off. The walk from the castle ruins goes down to the beach and several sea caves that you can explore. The sea caves were the location of several Pictish settlements and have some very interesting history. Some information can be found on signs along the hike. It was a lovely hike and made for great photos.

You will reach the castle after a 10-minute walk from the car park. It may not be the largest castle on the planet, but it has an interesting history having been built in the late 13th century as a courtyard fortress.

Amazing bit of history here. More around about too.

Only small thing I would complain about is the fact that the gate that is ment to prevent you from getting into the lower level is easy to just climb and get up to where there has been a hole broken in the wall. The people who upkeep this might want to try see if they can make it more difficult or nearly impossible to get into otherwise I can only see some drunk teenagers getting in and an accident happening witch would likely end up in the whole thing being blocked from the public.

A nice ruin . Not much left of it . Probably better to visit in winter as better access to the front is possible when the greenery is lower

Castle is a ruin and I assume debris prevents visitors getting too close. Jonathan's Cave was better for accessing. Coast is beautiful but rocky and slippy and difficult under foot. A steep approach - nice for a quick visit but suitable footwear needed.

Just a ruin. Unless you have a particular interest in this building it's not outstanding. It is, however, in a fairly attractive area and as a landmark on the walk it's very useful.

Pretty red sandstone castle or what's left of it, worth a look if you're going to the caves below
