Lynton & Lynmouth a hidden gem on the North Devon coast that completely exceeded my expectations. Perched above the picturesque village of Lynmouth & Lynton offers stunning views, old-world charm, and a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for a relaxing getaway.

The towns are full of character — from its historic buildings and quaint tea rooms to local art galleries and independent shops. It feels like stepping back in time, but with all the modern comforts you need. The streets are quiet, clean, and welcoming, and the locals are incredibly friendly and helpful.

One of the highlights of my visit was the famous Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway – a unique water-powered funicular that connects the two villages. The ride offers beautiful views over the cliffs and sea and is a fun experience for all ages. Another must-visit spot is Valley of Rocks, just a short walk from Lynton. The scenery there is absolutely breathtaking.

There are plenty of walking trails, coastal paths, and cosy cafes to enjoy. Whether you’re into hiking, photography, or just want to unwind, Lynton & Lynmouth is an ideal destination. I left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already planning my next visit.

Highly recommended for nature lovers and anyone wanting a peaceful escape by the sea.

The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is a true gem — charming, nostalgic, and surprisingly peaceful. The ride itself is short but absolutely delightful, offering breathtaking views over the coastline as you glide up and down between the two villages.

It’s a lovely mix of old-world charm and clever engineering — powered entirely by water, which makes the experience feel even more magical. Both Lynton and Lynmouth have their own unique feel, and the railway is the perfect connection between them.

Whether you’re into history, views, or just a wholesome experience, this little journey is a must. I could honestly ride it again and again . It’s one of those rare places that just makes you smile

Fab place for a day out. I love how dog friendly it is. Lovely independent shops to browse. Some even let you bring your dog in with you. There's a fab dog shop selling lots of natural treats, food, toys, and accessories, too.
The funicular is dog friendly and only costs £1 for them to go on it with you. Very friendly locals.
Could easily spend a long weekend here.

The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is a lovely little experience and a fun way to travel between the two towns. It’s a historic water-powered funicular that’s been running since the late 1800s, using nothing but gravity and water to move up and down the steep cliff. The ride is short but scenic, with great views over the coastline and harbour. It’s also surprisingly peaceful, with the gentle clinking of the mechanism and the sound of the sea below. A charming bit of engineering history, and a must-do if you’re visiting the area.

It was a good little trip up the cliff lift, expensive as there is no option to buy a return ticket, so it's a single fare up and a single fare down. So if you are parked at the bottom and are hard of walking, so can't make the long walk back down, then it's another fare! They've got you there! Also when you get to the top, there isn't a lot to do or see, so we were a little disappointed, there isn't really anything that tells you what is up at the top either so we had to go find out for ourselves.

Very nice experience to the top, a long way up. At the top is a small town, restaurant, cafes etc. From the top you can walk to The Valley of the Rocks. The walk is tough if you have walking problems, not recommended. Nice look along coast, high up, no guard rail, just narrow path to Rocks which not easy to reach the top unless very fit

A great experience. You can appreciate the view from the top where there is a great old fashioned tea room which is well worth a visit. Kids and adults love it.

The cliff railway is a fun way to travel up and down the hill. Price is for a single journey, so you can just go one way or pay again to return. There is a cafe at the top which serves amazing large scones. The views are stunning. Once on the carriage, a ding ding of the bell lets you know you're about to move. The staff are really friendly. It's unbelievable it's powered by water!
