Great stop for info and souvinirs. Picked up some magnets for my travels and saw the two assistants giving great local knowledge and help to travellers. Very friendly. This place reminds me of a place called zermatt in Switzerland. Busy environment, streets filled with outdoor stores and cafes of people preparing for expeditions to the mountains. Really cool.

Our favorite hike was to Lodore via Castlehead viewpoint, Walla Crag, Ashness bridge, and the surprisingly spectacular Barrow falls downstream of Ashness bridge that should be in the guidebooks. Since this trail is poorly marked with many side trails, the pre-downloaded Garmin trail map was essential. This hike was more interesting and had better views than did Catbells. We also enjoyed lunch at the Lingholm estate cafe, and drinks at the Lodore hotel. The walk up to the stone circle along narrow roads was a bit harrowing and satisfying only with respect to seeing the ingenuity of something manmade over 4000 years ago. Much more pleasant was the stroll through Hope park and then further South along the East shoreline of the lake. The WOW trail in Whinlatter forest was not that interesting, and wish we had done the Segway option. The 77a bus ride loop was worthwhile to see the countryside. Holehird Garden near Windermere has amazing flowering plants over a hillside. Our favorite restaurant was Fellpack. If you like dog-watching you will really enjoy Keswick which was named the most dog-friendly town. The show at Theatre in the Park was fun. FYI, our entire trip was by public transport and walking, and we never had to convert money since credit cards worked everywhere.
