About Isle of May Cruises and the Isle of May

\n

Anstruther Pleasure Cruises’ Isle of May cruises are centered around exploring the Isle of May, a small tidal island situated approximately 3.5 miles off the coast of Anstruther. The island itself is a vital breeding ground for numerous seabird species, including puffins, guillemots, razorbills, and kittiwakes. Visitors often remark on the sheer scale of the bird colonies, creating a truly awe-inspiring spectacle. While the island’s center is remarkably basic, offering facilities such as toilets and information about the local birdlife, the primary draw is undoubtedly the wildlife viewing opportunities. Recent visitors have noted that the peak puffin season is often past by the time of the cruises, with most of the birds having departed for the winter. However, the other bird species remain prevalent, offering a rich and diverse experience.

Recommended Information for Prospective Visitors

\n

When planning a visit, it's advisable to book in advance, particularly during peak season. Due to the popularity of the cruises, spaces are limited, and early booking is strongly recommended to secure a preferred time slot. Visitors should also be prepared for potentially crowded conditions on the boat, as the vessels are often fully booked. Comfortable footwear is essential for exploring the island, as the terrain can be uneven and rocky. Weather conditions can change rapidly, so it’s prudent to check the forecast before embarking on the cruise and to dress appropriately. While the island’s center offers basic amenities, it’s advisable to bring snacks and drinks to supplement the onboard provisions. Finally, remember to respect the wildlife and the environment, following all guidelines provided by the crew.

Had a very good day sailing out to isle of May, especially as it was a very calm day. The boat was fully booked so be prepared to be very close to other people. The crew were very knowledgeable about all the wild life, coffee and snacks on board. We had two hours on the island, which seems a lot but time flies quickly. Centre on Isle is very basic toilets and centre with active for kids and info about birds on island. Well worth the visit even though most puffins and other birds had left.

Loved the trip to the Isle of May on the May Princess! The crew was very kind and accommodating, providing a memorable experience with their knowledgeable commentary about the island's wildlife and history. The trip lasts around 4.5 to 5 hours, including 2.5 to 3 hours ashore on the island. The May Princess sails from Anstruther to the Isle of May almost every day from April 1st to September 30th. A great way to see thousands of puffins and other seabirds in their natural habitat!

We wanted to do something different when visiting the Fife coast, and this was it. We really enjoyed our visit to the Isle of May and had a great experience onboard. The skipper and staff were great, and very knowledgable.

The island is great to visit but be mindful of what time of year you go, depending on what you want to see. We just missed out on seeing Puffins by a couple of weeks, which was a shame but there is a lot to see on the island.

There’s a tuck shop onboard with ample selection, if you were hungry or thirsty.

Would visit again, at a different time of year to see different animals.

Visited on 11 April expecting to see puffins on the island however when we arrived the warden informed the staff that they had almost all left and went out to sea but luckily I managed to a photo from some distance and was probably the only one on the boat lucky enough to get one. Anyway, despite that it was still a great day out particularly due to the excellent weather we had. The boat cruise was well organised, they expect you to be there about 45 minutes before departure time which varies due to the tides. There is a hut situated on the middle pier next to the RNLI station where you check in and get a boarding card. It is advisable to book in advance as many days will be fully booked during the peak times. The journey time to the island is about 1 hour and the boat carries up to 100 passengers. The boat has a little snack bar selling hot drinks and some souvenirs. There are also toilets on the boat. Beware that the crossing can be a bit choppy and this is exaggerated on the top deck so best to concentrate on the horizon to avoid motion sickness. Depending on conditions the boat will do a little tour and the skipper gives a little commentary over the loud speaker with some useful information and history. We had 2 1/2 hours on the island, I would have liked a bit more time as it’s difficult to cover the whole island in that timeframe especially when stopping to take photos, packed lunch, etc. The return time was clearly displayed as well on our arrival at the island and the staff use a clicker to make sure everyone has returned. The crew were all very professional and friendly and given that I didn’t get to see as much wildlife as I had hoped for it was still a brilliant day out. I will be back in the next couple of months so will keep an eye on how quickly the availability fills up.

Our trip to Isle of May was such an unforgettable experience. The island itself has so much history, not to mention the spectacular views and the wildlife. The staff on the May Princess were friendly and knowledgeable; we thoroughly enjoyed chatting to them about all the different seabirds and ongoing research on the island. There is a little gift shop/bar on board as well, which meant we were able to enjoy a cheeky drink on the westward crossing back to Anstruther.

A fantastic trip and well worth the money. The crew were fantastic and very knowledgeable. We were lucky to see a vast array of wildlife and some people need to remember the crew cannot make animals appear. The boat has a nice little snack and gift section.

We had an amazing time on the island, in time to see the puffins and lots more. The island is very manageable, just follow the well indicated paths.
Friendly crew, eager to share their local knowledge, ensuring everyone is ok. Timings and time spent on the island depend on the tides.
Definitely recommend. Don't forget your binoculars.
