I like my creature comforts and am as far away from Bear Grylls as possible. Neither am I a "write-a-review" type person but wanted to get down my gratitude and potentially help anyone looking to escape to a simpler, more enjoyable way of city-free living (even it’s just for the weekend).
I’m a London based dad of 2 young active nippers and me and my partner are just back from 6 nights of hygge living and unforgettable magic living under the stars.
This is a very special place - lovingly and thoughtfully created by the ever energetic owners John and Sarah, with the perfect balance of minimalist living and touches of lux – all with the mindfulness of ecological, sustainable living at the heart.
Inside and out, the truffle pods are incredible to look at - almost other worldly - especially within their tranquil setting. They are totally bespoke and their back-story build is fascinating. They are super cosy and the 2 large side windows invite nature right into your living space (not literally - I’m not into spiders as much as the next man). It rained a few nights when we were there - with the lights dimmed, these were my most memorable evenings. We stayed in July and all was perfect in terms of room temperature. We never needed the inside burner - but imagine how cosy it would be in Autumn.
They are impressively big on the inside, ours came with an internal hammock, large double bed, we put in an additional cot and had a camp bed and there was still ample room to move around and chase the kids. The insides are free from clutter and unnecessaries - the up-cycled table / chairs are complemented with lovely blankets and touches of minimal Scandi hand-crafted objects. There are no electrical sockets and the lights are battery powered.
I think there are 5 truffle pods, we stayed in “Sun Dapple” and ours came its own private outdoor wood burning space and large, covered “open plan” kitchen area. There is a gas powered hob and kettle (and more - it’s all been considered for you). There is no electricity here (deliberately so) but everything you need is in this kitchen - the memories of freshly cooked evening meal times will stay with me for ever. There are battery powered festoon lights for atmospheric evenings.
Making an early morning brew amongst nature, singing birds and bubbling kettle were amazing.
The day was wrapped up with a roaring fire and couple of cold beers (each pod has it’s own private fridge) watching the kids play / getting covered in marshmallows.
Each pod has it’s OWN allocated shower / bathroom area and are a 2 min winding walk away (through the pathed woods). Each pod has its own kitchen wash-up space here too (and an electrical socket for personal use). The textural, wood panelling contrasts with the polished chrome, new fixtures and fittings and complement the natural surroundings. They are beautifully constructed, spacious and are both kitchen and shower areas are (OCD level) immaculate.
For those that want to venture out a little, there are a few local bits and bobs to explore (cafe / parkland) within a short distance from the pod and are all considerately listed in the accompanying details.
The pod areas themselves are private and well spaced apart - there were couples and families there and we never heard any noise from their areas. It truly felt like we were off-grid and away from the treadmill. We came back to London with full hearts, minds and iPhones (it’s impossible not to photograph everything!)
This is a very special place for family fun and forever memories, all lovingly created by the incredible John and Sarah.
My kids loved it, me and my partner will never forget it. I cannot recommend a stay here highly enough. It’s magical. Thank you John and Sarah (and we’ll hopefully see you next year!)
