Loved it. What better way to 'hit the Thames' quickly and affordable!

This friendly, family run (since 1908), small ferry is a delight... running from Twickenham across to within a few hundred yards of Ham House, a NT property (house and gardens) in Richmond.

Lovely views of the river and surrounding area.

Top tip if you plan to visit by car - the bottom half of Orleans Rd is free to park after 1630 weekdays (didn't note weekends, sorry). NB it is quite narrow due to resident parking further up.

Fun ride for the kiddos. Quickest way to get to Strawberry Hill House and Gardens on the opposite bank, also to Orleans Gardens for the kiddos. Well maintained boat, clean and spacious, there's room for bicycles and buggies. They levy a charge for bicycles. Friendly crew. Best and pleasurable way to cross the river! Tricky boarding the boat at high tide - take care with kids and pets. Some days with unusually high tides, they pause the service. They charge a pound for adults, kids half price. Cheap, enjoyable ride for the kiddos! The same people who own the ferry also do rowing boat hire.

Hammerton's Ferry is the perfect way to get across the River Thames from Twickenham to Ham/Petersham. Have used it a few times and it's always a pleasure. Lovely staff working on the ferry. They are now taking cards, which is good as I rarely carry any cash.

For the small price of a £1, this ferry allows you to cross the River Thames easily from Ham House to the Middlesex side close to Marble Hill House. This means you can feasibly then walk to Twickenham or St. Margrets stations. You also get a good view of Eel Pie Island.

I'm trying to understand why there is no bridge to cross; that's annoying, but this service is handy if you're trying to go to Ham's house. It's £2 and they take a card, which is so convenient. The guy seemed to know his stuff about the local area and was helpful. I'm not sure why it is marked as temporarily closed, but I pity the people who would have to walk around for an hour to cross the river in Richmond.

This ferry saves time and effort if you want to visit Ham side or vice versa.
For £2 per passenger , per one way it's so worth it.
The trip across take less than 5 min and staff are always friendly and chatty.

On the Twickenham side the way to the boat is just after the main playground, you can't miss it.
However on the Ham side there is no big sign to say it's here... Its probebly like a 5 min walk to the car park .

We revisited the area after 35 years, arrived at St Margaret's train station, 20 minutes walk away. We caught the ferry over to Ham House , saves the walk the long way round. An excellent service, well priced and friendly. My only concern is that the steps on the Ham House side of the river are a little bit tricky for people who may not be as sure footed as others. May I suggest a hand rail to hold onto?
