Just returned from my honeymoon aboard the Castles of Transylvania train and I’m still in a whirl – it was a dream come true. To call it luxurious would be a huge understatement -- I felt pampered and perfectly catered to throughout the journey. The room was expectedly small but well-furnished and comfortable; the windows were nice and big. The bar car was a hoot with Gabor's music and the specialty drinks were delicious. Gourmet meals (including decadent desserts) were taken in a beautiful dining car. The entire staff went above and beyond in everything they did, and Andrea, Veronika and Marianna (I may have misspelled) ran the program perfectly with efficiency and good humor. Dr. Sharon (full-time doctor on board) always had an eye and ear open on the passengers and handled a minor emergency admirably. Even the tour guides that were hired at various towns were exemplary (and hilarious). This was an unforgettable, wonderful experience.

Took the Golden Eagle Danube Express from Vienna to Milan. NOT a luxury experience, in fact disappointing and very overpriced. Pluses: Delicious food, friendly staff. But So Many Downsides: Rigid schedule b/c the train only stops at each station for a few minutes, then goes to a depot to be serviced. Train is parked at busy stations overnight with other trains loudly speeding by a few inches from our window, hard to sleep. Mattresses hard as rocks with no padding. Sticky filthy carpeting, make sure you wear slippers in your room. Showers limited to 50 seconds per push, impossible to wash hair thoroughly. Bar car was overheated and stank of tobacco despite their false claims of being a "non smoking train." No activities onboard, bad wi fi. Would not repeat this experience.
