Best way to get to Orkney. The ferry takes about an hour, you get to see some beautiful sights and the staff have always been really friendly.
Food on board is great too - simple, but quality.
Only downside is that you can’t take dogs indoors on the boat. I understand why, but it’s a little annoying to have to sit outside with them for the whole journey (as you can imagine, it can be rather chilly), or a shame to leave them in the car. At least it’s only a short journey!

Update: dogs are now allowed on board! So they can enjoy the views too. They’re in a room designated for dogs (and owners), so aren’t with everyone else if dogs aren’t your vibe. Great job Pentland Ferry 👍🏻

Just coming into Gills bay from Orkney on the Catalina. Fantastic cliffs and a great crossing. The boat serves basic food and it is a reasonable price. Would recommend this way to Orkney.

Very close to John O' Groats and an excellent little ferry terminal to take the boat over to St Margaret's Hope on mainland Orkney. The voyage takes an hour, give or take a minute or 2.
