I had heard about Cantick Head years ago and was so looking forward to the experience of staying there - and it didn’t disappoint!

Firstly, the location is amazing and the views are breathtaking. The house is traditionally decorated and filled with very thoughtful touches - a telescope, board games and interesting books. The kitchen is wee but well stocked with all you might need. Having fresh farm eggs waiting for us was such a treat and my daughter loved going out to feed the chickens each morning. We were also entertained by the 3 friendly dogs on the property and their antics. Alan was very welcoming and responsive. And then add in the hot tub and the sauna which are perfect at sunset for watching the sky change and the lighthouses in the distance turn on … that was quite magical!

Some things for future visitors to be aware of are that the road up to the lighthouse is long and very bumpy! You’ll want to stock up on all you need before you reach Cantick Head. This would include firewood as the hot tub, sauna and BBQ are wood powered. There is a great walk from the back of the lighthouse (Cantick Head Circular).

We stayed in the Cantick Head lighthouse cottage for four nights and had the most relaxing and fulfilling experience ever. We were welcomed with complimentary organic eggs, delicious Oakney oatcakes, butter biscuits, cheese and a bottle of fine Prosecco. We have revelled in the mesmerising view of the sunrise atop the ocean, the sauna and the hot tub by the seaside the most. Our 9 and 6 year old children made the most of the awesome DVD collection and board games. Alan and his family have been wonderful hosts - as have been their chickens and dogs. This is amongst our best holiday spots and we hope to return someday!

I would highly recommend this property. The cottage had everything you could possibly want. The views are absolutely incredible and change continually. The sauna overlooking the Pentland Firth was a highlight for my husband and I. Thanks to both Alan & Vicky for opening up their property to visitors. We will definitely be back and look forward to our next journey to Cantick Head Lighthouse ❤️

What and incredible and exceptional five day stay. Cantick Lighthouse cottage was such a wonderful experience for us both!

Alan was the most gracious host, welcoming us into our new home away from home. Everything we needed was provided. The kitchen was so well equipped. The home was warm and snug, an abundance of hot water, fireplace, huge fluffy towels, beautiful cotton bedding, comfy beds; games, books, telescope, binoculars; everything was perfect.

I found so comforting looking at the sea through the kitchen window whilst preparing meals. Seeing the lighthouse from the rooms inside was a gentle reminder of how extraordinary this stay was.

We enjoyed walks along the cliff line, ambled along the coastline, enjoyed a sauna, played cards in a sheltered spot on the cliff face; and used Cantick as a base to further explore the island.

We've already spoken about returning again, and seeing we are from Australia, it's a pretty big journey that we have no hesitation making to enjoy a longer stay next time.

We have had the most amazing time staying here at Cantick Head Lighthouse Self Catering Cottage, Hoy, Orkney, Scotland. The view from our window is absolutely gorgeous. Very clean and spacious cottage, with the comfiest beds to sleep in. Alan (the host) is very accommodating and friendly, couldn’t be more helpful or kind. I would definitely stay here again and can’t wait to come back. 5 stars all round

Fantastic location to get away from it all! Very comfy and well equipped. The veiws are spectacular and you can spend hours just watching the sea. Alan made us feel very welcome and us very knowledgeable on the local wildlife. High recommend!!!

Our last night here was spent discussing all the people we can’t wait to bring here and holiday with. It’s been a fantastic few days, full of coastal/cliff walks, hot tub, sauna, snorkelling, good food, feeding the chickens, and staring at the sea. A totally unique stay. Alan made us feel very welcome and relaxed.

Fantastic cottage in a fantastic location. Beautifully appointed with everything you need—everything is top notch, from the towels to the toaster. The views are spectacular. It’s a brilliant place to spend relaxing days. And the friendly chickens are a plus.
