We used Caledonian MacBrayne ferries to sail from the mainland to the Isle of Bute.
Customer services prior to the trip were friendly and helpful as we were not sure if we needed to prebook. We turned up on the day and bought our open return tickets. Each way for the car and two passengers was around £20.
There’s a cafe on board and the trip takes less than an hour and is comfortable and has great views.

Taking the commuter ferry to Scottish isles is much more affordable than the private cruise companies. We went to Lismore, 2 adults return £13.40. One can sit on the upper deck or inside. Very friendly crew too. Would highly recommend.

We watched the ferry leaving Largs and heading back again and as it was our last day on holiday we didn't have the time to go over to Millport but next time we're down that way we will make a point of visiting.

Nearly a year later (19th June, 2023) and, from a FOI, the overall performance of CalMac's 'Lifeline Ferry Services' has been just 31 Days of Ferry Services without interruption or cancellation, this in FIFTEEN MONTHS!

Friday 16th June saw Services to Bute canx'd at short notice and Customers, many vulnerable together with Children and/or Dogs, left in sweltering conditions or turned away completely - no Customer Care apparent and certainly no Duty of Care evident at all.

2022.
1 of 2 Ferries cancelled today (Friday, 19th August, 2022).

Resulting in 2 hour wait.
Plans for the entire day severely disrupted.

Little or no information provided only 'matter of fact' statement of cancellations.

No corporate concern for Foot Passengers.

Traffic chaos for vehicle drivers.

A78 Road closed in both directions for a time, public bus services disrupted.

Return journey was little better.
