I went to Brogdale for the Cherry picking. Lots of fun and very yummy!
It is a stunning site, I could have spent all day there.
They have huge poly tunnels modelling climate change with increased temperatures up to +4 degrees than normal with drought conditions to see what will grow well in the future.
They plant two each from hundreds of varieties of fruit trees from all around the world.
This is the UK's National Collection of Fruit Trees and is an exceptionally beautiful and important heritage and research site.
The entrance walkway has some beautiful cherry, pear and apple trees alongside the model railway track. Well worth a visit!

We were so disappointed to learn that Brogdale uses herbicides and pesticides to grow their fruit trees when these are known to affect/damage the DNA of plants, including trees. The purpose of a national plant collection is to conserve/preserve for future generations. There was no evidence of an interest in organic or natural preventions, and we saw virtually no insects on the site.

We visited on Apple day and had a good time! There were tractor, miniature train and walking tours of the orchards, live music, falconry, archery, Apple demonstrations (tasting etc) as well as a range of food and craft stalls. The entertainment is more limited outside of the theme days.

Well worth a visit and plenty to keep children occupied for a few hours.

Not very much to see in August, probably because I’m not on fruits.
2x1 entry with the BBC Gardeners’ World Card.
