This is an excellent tour of the cave workings that were carved out of solid rock by the Romans, then the Saxons and the Normans right up until the 1800’s. It’s all because the high quality of the limestone seam here, which has very few impurities and so has been used in many cathedrals and churches around the country. The roof constantly drips water but you do wear a hard hat. It’s chilly too, so wear something warm.

It’s not a tour for children as they would get bored quickly, but great for adults interested in history or geology. We did get to see some hibernating bats who are now arriving in the caves for the winter and so the caves now close from November through to next spring.

I highly recommend this if you are in the area. Gill was our tour guide and she was very entertaining and knowledgeable. We phoned the day before to book. The history of the quarry was really interesting. It's a good idea to wear a few layers because it was quite cold when you get inside.

In a word, ............. incredible !
We've lived in neighbouring seaton for nearly 3 years and today was our first visit to Beer Quarry Caves. I had no idea the sheer magnitude of the caves and the vast history that was/is literally on our doorstep. So interesting. Our guide,Shirley, was amazing. Full of knowledge and hilariously funny, could have listened to her guided tour for hours. She certainly knows her stuff. All in all, an amazing place and would recommend to anyone. Fantastic !

Fascinating quarry caves that date back to roman times. Well worth the visit, lots to see. The tour guide was great, he gave a very informative tour and had a clear loud voice that everyone could hear.

We have been meaning to go here for a while and this year we made it, well worth the visit and tour around the quarry. A really interesting tour conducted by Martin, who took us around around and told us about its history and stories. Tour took about 1 hour and a half. Wrap up warm as it is cool whilst on the tour. Don't forget to call ahead and book on a tour.

Thoroughly enjoyed Beer Quarry Caves , I would highly recommend going. Our tour guide was Dave, who was fantastic with so much knowledge. It was educational but he gave his talk with a good sense of humour to young and old. A definite must do if you’re in the area. 👍🏻😊.

Travelled 40 miles from Weymouth whilst on holiday today and so glad I did.

What a fabulous tour of the Quarry Caves this was. Our guide for the 90 minute experience was Steve and what a great job he did with giving a detailed history of the caves, showing the difference between the extraction techniques and stories from over 2000 years ago starting with the Romans up until the current day.

I would highly recommend it this experience to all. Thanks to all the staff who made this a super morning out.

There is a small cafe area, toilets, free parking and place to get yourself a fridge magnet.

Tours run every hour from half past the hour but may be best to phone up the day before and book yourself a time.

Make sure you wear some warm clothes as the temp does drop to around 8 degrees.

There is small single track road leading off the main road to get to the car park in case you are a weary driver and want to let someone else drive.

Stumbled across it while driving the thin lanes of Devon. Thought hey why not pop on in, we are in holiday from NZ let’s see what it’s all about.

Jed the guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. It was surreal going into the place that has been going since the Romans rocked up to these shores.

I found out halfway through that my great great great grandfather ( there maybe another great in there?) used to work there. When times were lean at Portland Quarry workers used to come there and do a 16hr work day to earn some coin.

Our 16yr old daughter who isn’t a history kinda gal was like… wow this is so cool. She was so interested in it.
