We had a wonderful 10-day stay at Barend and have already booked again for next year. Our family loved the quiet beach, with its shallow waters that are perfect for little ones. The green space around the lodges gave the children plenty of room to run and play, and the pool was a great bonus too.

Our lodge was very well equipped, with a great selection of films and board games to enjoy on rainy days.

Barend holiday lodges were the perfect accommodation and location for our family short break away. We were a party of 12 and were attending a family wedding near by. These lodges provided space and quiet for our family. The setting amongst the forest was beautiful. The lodges were comfortable and had everything we needed.|We used the swimming pool everyday and the on site restaurant was superb. |The sandy beach was a ten minute walk. Access to forest walks and a deer park were also on hand.|Staff were polite and friendly. |A brilliant break and we all said we would return.

Our family of four spent a weekend in lodge 69 in early August 2025. The log-cabin style lodge is a little dated and dark, with the odd cobweb and a slightly tight electric-shower-over-bath arrangement. However, it is extremely well equipped, very clean and very comfortable and cosy at night. The pool is great to have, the area is lovely and quiet, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We had a lovely short stay and would definitely go back. The deer safari next door is excellent.

Spent the first 4 days cleaning the lodge, shower had hair and fluff all over. Hoover had to be striped as that was clogged with hair and didn't work properly. Fridge had congealed meat juices in the bottom. Mattress were thin and worn out. Only things within walking distance is the deer park which was good. And the beach was ok but mostly mud, but if you wanted to see the sea when the tide was out it's a 2 mile walk across the mud flats. The nearest grocery shop is 2 miles away and there is no walking routes there. Ended up leaving early. I WONT BE GOING BACK !

We have been staying at Barend for over a decade (twice a year). We always stayed in the lodges managed by Barend and had some great holidays. We started staying in the independently managed lodges a few years ago as we felt the standards of those management by the Barend team were dropping. However, we would still book if that fitted with our dates. A couple of years ago we had an issue and experienced really poor customer service - the Barend management are solely focussed on making money - to the detriment of the customer experience.||In April, we ended up staying once again in their lodges as that’s all that was available for the dates we could visit (my husband booked as I wouldn’t any more). I’m not going to give the number of the lodge as I don’t want it to reflect on the owners, but it was so dusty in places, it clearly hadn’t been cleaned thoroughly for a long time. The windows were filthy and the kitchenware was sparse (one wine glass for instance) The en-suite shower leaked through to the downstairs on the first use. We were fine with this, and said they could sort after we left. They didn’t apologise or even make a small gesture. In fact, we had to chase up our £200 deposit several times as it had not been returned. Once again, no apology and actually an aggressive response, and discriminatory language used by the manager. ||I’ve read it in other reviews so I know this isn’t just us. I don’t generally write reviews, but I couldn’t let this one go.||On a positive note, there are some really great lodges NOT managed by Barend, and now the onsite bar/restaurant is being run independent of them, it’s a welcoming place with great food, once again.

Great site. Very peaceful. Within easy reach of the beach. Lodge was very modern with everything we needed. Very spacious too. Great view from the veranda. Also very dog friendly.Dalbeatie is a 10 minute drive away with a well stocked Co op. The pool was excellent. Lots of rabbits roaming free. Very well maintained site. Would definitely come again.

Lovely lodges, came for a girl's weekend which was fun. Cabin was great value and perfect location for hiking and the beach. The cabin was quite small for 8 of us but expected for the price. Biggest downfall was the shower leaked down the stairs (getting all of our belongings wet) meaning we only had one working bathroom between 8 of us. We were told this was fixed but the problem continued, the shower was leaking a significant amount of water. However we still had a good time, views were lovely and the kitchen well stocked with plates and glasses etc. Was nice to have a fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle etc so we could cook for ourselves as some of the local puns were lovely but expensive. Would return

We just returned from a brilliant short break at Barend. The lodge was perfect for an active long weekend, and everything was very well maintained. The swimming pool was a treat after some cycling at the local MTB centres, the restaurant (The Crab Pot) was very good, and all the staff were warm and welcoming.
