A picturesque place. Have many nice Treks, surrounded by beautiful trees, waterfall, bridges, mountains. The castle Campbell holds historical importance, and gives a spot to visit during the peaceful wandering in nature.
Parking available, a board as you enter the area says there is a parking for 16 vehicles but doesn't provide a real time information, so you need to actually drive till their parking to know whether there is a spot. As you begin short Treks, there are some benches available near the castle. The maps nicely explain your position and the possible treks around. Clean area, as the dustbins near the castle are serving the purpose, and so are the lovely people who follow the guidelines.

I had an unforgettable experience visiting Dollar Castle and the surrounding area, including the beautiful Dollar Glen.
The castle itself is a well-preserved historical gem, full of charm and offering a glimpse into Scotland’s rich past.
The architecture is stunning, and exploring the grounds was a highlight, with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It’s clear a lot of care has gone into preserving the site, making it an ideal spot for history lovers.

Just a short walk away is Dollar Glen, which is equally enchanting. The Glen offers picturesque trails that wind through lush woodlands, along streams, and beneath towering trees.
It’s the perfect place for a peaceful hike or a relaxing walk, with plenty of spots to stop and take in the beauty of nature.
The combination of the castle and the Glen makes this area incredibly special.

The town of Dollar nearby adds to the charm, with its quaint shops, cafes, and a friendly atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a perfect mix of history, natural beauty, and tranquility, Dollar Castle and Dollar Glen are not to be missed.
It’s an ideal destination for anyone wanting to explore Scotland’s stunning landscapes and rich heritage.

Dollar Glen offers breathtaking views and stunning walks regardless of the weather and time of the year. Obviously, on a sunny summer day this place is much easier to access but could be enjoyable for a trip on a rainy day too. I have been up there in Autumn, Spring and Summer.

There are car parks in Dollar, half way through to Campbell Castle and nearer Campbell Castle. The last two car parks have limited spaces, about 15 and 10 respectively, and are free of charge. A steep and narrow road leads to both of them. Though, accessible for campervans and vans.

It's worth knowing that Campbell Castle is free to access for members of the National Trust of Scotland, even though it's part of the Historic Scotland. It's one of the two places in Scotland this is allowed.

A fantastic dive into pure nature and a true Scottish gem!

Accessibility: I want to put this first because it will save disappointment; this area is not wheelchair accessible and is not suitable for those with restricted mobility. The glen is extremely deep and steep. There are no handrails or barriers between you and the gorge/burn running through it, so young children would not be reccomended. We have climbed down with a sesible 7 year old, but I'd probably say 8+ for children. The ground is a mixture of slippery mud (even if it's been sunny), exposed rock, and some wooden bridges which are slippery.

The glen is a magical place which is always humid and full of huge ferns, fallen trees and rushing water. We visited in July after a heatwave and the waterfalls were still spectacular.

We always use this route as a means to reach Castle Campbell at the head of the glen. You go up on the road towards the castle, then take the first car park on your right, opposite the entrance to the glen (there's a big wooden sign on the left). It may seem counter intuitive, but walking down the side of the gorge into the glen, then wandering up the rocky walk ways and bridges to the castle is SO MUCH nicer (and slightly easier), than parking and just walking up the narrow road where cars are always coming up and down.

The walk is dramatic in all seasons, the parking is free, the entry is free... and if you want a longer challenger you can park at the bottom of the hill in Dollar Village and walk up from there.

We loved the 2.5 h walk around the whole area and although it’s family friendly, my 3 years old struggled in some parts. There are steep and slippery areas, and there aren’t handrails all the way, making it a bit dangerous.

Terrific trek and lovely picturesque scenery along the way. Nature at its beautiful best! Excellent stuff by the National trust to maintain it this way and also for the lovely steps along the way! Definitely recommend the trek! Great work out as well!

Dollar Glen is a fantastic place to visit, especially on a beautiful sunny day. The trek was easy and perfect for children and dogs, though not wheelchair accessible. The views from the top are spectacular, offering a sense of calm and tranquility. Along the way, the waterfalls, scenic steps, and lush surroundings make for a breathtaking experience. Although the castle is closed, you can still admire its front view. We enjoyed a small picnic at the top and met fellow trekkers. Bring your own food and water. Parking is available, so there’s nothing to worry about. A truly wonderful day!

First walk along #DollarGlen up the gorge to Castle Campbell - free entry using NTS membership card. Thankfully there is new wooden handrails and bridges with plenty of stopping points to enjoy the walk. Pleased I managed it as quite rugged in places but worth the views. Super way to spend Sunday afternoon. Took backpack with snacks and lots to drink as very humid in August 2025.
