Absolutely fantastic place to step back into the past. Staff are friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable. Cafe is vary reasonably priced as is the gift shop. Plenty of good free parking and easy to find. We'll worth a visit for all ages.

A lot different to your usual museum. A good tour around the inside museum and then plenty of outdoor activities and learning about the different crafts and techniques used. The cafe was nice and the shop was well stocked. Amazing to see the Crannog being rebuilt after the fire.

Absolutely loved our visit to the Crannog Centre. We went to the Easter event but would have honestly enjoyed it if it was a regular day. We got a tour of the museum with a very engaging and knowledgeable tour guide. Followed by a walk around all of the huts and working areas including getting a shot wood working, tasting some pancakes and making crafts. We also visited the cafe, the food was lovely and there are a lot of choices. Staff were all so friendly and welcoming we definitely want to visit again.

Well worth a visit .
Most interesting recreation of iron age life with demonstrations of trades and skills fully explained by well informed and knowledgeable artisans who were adept in showing how iron smithing, cooking weaving etc were done
Construction of new Crannog underway using traditional methods.Looking forward to going back when it's complete

What a fantastic place to visit! The old crannog burnt down in a heartbreaking accident in the early 2020’s. Through kind donations the centre has moved and rebuilt. A host of traditionally- constructed buildings showcase the key roles in iron-age village life. A tour guide provides an introduction to the centre. Visitors are then left to wander through the different buildings to learn about iron-age life. This is highly engaging for all ages. In each building a guide chats to you about their role in village life. It’s interactive and there are plenty of hands-on opportunities. Cooking demonstrations included hands-on grinding of wheat, watching bread cooked on the fire and tasting of the bread with foraged wild garlic and garlic mustard butter (or raspberry and apple jam if you prefer). At the forge we learnt about how to judge metal temperature from its colour, that apprenticeship started at age 7yo as basic labourer and that blacksmiths travelled from village to village to share their services. Wood working was fantastic fun with a rudimentary foot-pedal lathe and another simple device, used with a draw-knife, enables planing of wood. Lastly, we learnt about weaving and dying wool. A new crannog is being constructed over the water and should be completed in a year or two. A second is planned. Workshops are offered at the centre and they’re always looking for volunteers. Both would be an incredible experience.
Practicalities…. There is parking for probably 20+ cars and longer vehicles. Electric vehicle charging stations are available. There’s a toilet block just outside the visitor centre. Family ticket was around £40 (2 adults, 2 kids), adults around £15. There’s a cafe on-site selling a range of toasties and soup of the day along with tea and coffee. Prices are reasonable (soup and toastie was £10, coffee was around £3.50-£4).

Excellent hands on museum showing how we lived in the Iron Age. In the process of building a new Crannog on the lake - massive! It is an entrancing place to visit - you can learn so much - whether you are interested in cloth, weaving and natural dyes, or woodworking, blacksmithing, grinding seed into flour and cooking on fire…
We spent the whole day there - it was fabulous… The cafe has lovely soup, rolls, pies and cakes - and is a beautiful building with living roof. The shop is chockful of interesting books and gifts - many handmade locally.
The staff , paid and volunteers - are committed and eager to share their knowledge.
If you are in a camper van you can pay £20 and stay on the shoreside overnight. It is probably the best place we have ever visited!!

New site with modern facilities, plenty of parking and lots to see and do. If you can gift aid with your entry fee then you can return again for the next year. Handy for those who are really interested like us. The museum has lots of artifacts on display and a guide will take you through the history. They are still building the crannog out into the loch but there are several buildings with different functions in the iron age village. We tried our hand at wood turning and cutting. There are activities for kids as well as adults. Every building has at least one staff member to explain what is being displayed and demonstrated. Cafe and shop for those who need them .

Amazing insight into the crannog lifestyle with blacksmith, wood turner, loom weaver and many more interactive points to learn the history and life of the people who lived there. You can go down onto the loch and see the new crannog they are building from below. Nice cafe and small book/gift shop
