The Black Mountain Centre Cafe looked more like a red brick school building to me, but what do I know?

I would like to first acknowledge the naming of the lake above Cwmllynfell (previously the East Pit open cast or the crater I created when I fell to Earth; the truth will never be known). It is now officially Lake Bernard LeCox! I am not the owner of the lake, only the namesake. Lake Bernard LeCox is the greatest lake in the universe. Described by my sister, Maxwell Murgatroid McGonigal III, as "very wet." That's informative.

Lake Bernard LeCox; got a ring to it, don't you think?

I mention Lake Bernard LeCox because that is where this review begins. I was training with the army on the mighty lake. I was having to redo my deep-sea diving certification after it was revoked following that unfortunate accident with the Titan submersible... oh, the humanity...

I was at the lake with my sister, Maxwell Murgatroid McGonigal III (a fat and very unconvincing cross-dresser). She has taken up a new diet to lose weight: The Whale Diet. She's going on a three-month holiday in the Atlantic Ocean where she will live among the humpback whales. She will be one with the whales, using only the gyrations of her body to move through the water. The weight loss on a plankton-only diet is remarkable... I worry about her. Maybe her 27th lobotomy was one too many...

After completing my training (please read: after I was thrown out of the submarine because they realised my track record) and Maxwell had done whatever the heck she was doing, we decided it was time for dinner. I was looking through Google Maps and stumbled upon the Black Mountain Centre Cafe.

I walked to the cafe from the lake while Maxwell insisted on doing the "whale" to the cafe. If you are wondering what the "whale" looks like, imagine the worm dance move crossed with an epileptic seizure.

We walked in through the door and were greeted by a delightful little shop. It was there we first saw her. A woman who looked like the Bride of Frankenstein had been caught in a wind tunnel (I knew Frankenstein; he's done better work). We sat down in the cafe to enjoy our meal. I ordered the classic full English, I do love a full English, whereas Maxwell ordered the special of the day: a steak and onion sandwich.

We sat down and had a natter. I enjoyed looking at the little display of Brynamman history. However, we kept getting distracted. The Bride of Frankenstein, with hair like she'd stuck her head out of a car window while doing 90 mph, seemed to be busy trying to look busy. In all my thousands of years on this earth, I have never seen someone doing so little while looking so busy and flustered!

Our food arrived, and it looked great. My breakfast was hearty and warming to the soul (especially after spending all morning at the bottom of Lake Bernard LeCox). The quality was good on the whole, but nothing too special or outstanding. It was enjoyable, but by no means the best breakfast I've ever had. Maxwell swallowed everything, including the plate and cutlery, whole. I questioned it, but she insisted it was practice for the Whale Diet and eating habits. Weird, but each to their own.

The Black Mountain Cafe: 4/5. (As we were leaving, Maxwell and I looked on in wonder as Frankenstein's bride was looking busy rearranging the wine bottles in the far corner of the post office. She was there for 25 minutes trying to arrange the order of no more than eight bottles of wine.)

There have been a lot of negative comments and reviews of this place; mostly about parking and staff, so, as someone who’s here every day, I’m going to address both of these issues; first, there’s a huge car park just across the street, that’s free! It has 100 spaces. The car park that is immediately in front of the center is all disabled parking for obvious reasons. Second, this place is entirely staffed by amazing, lovely volunteers, who give their time and hard work selflessly. Rudeness begets rudeness. Pleasantness begets pleasantness. I’ve seen more than one occasion of a member of the public coming into this center with rude demands and expectations. No smile. No hello. Etc. I’ll leave that where it belongs. This place does excellent events, quiz nights, breakfasts, art classes, has a state-of-the-art IT suite, a library, and so much more! So, don’t read the negatives and brush is off; come and see for yourself! I only give 4 stars because there’s always room for improvement, and that includes everyone and everything in this life.
