Great modern bird hide, beautifully decorated inside by local schoolchildren. Lots of information inside including a brief history of the Harrier population and Eddie Balfour, the great Hen Harrier observer. Well done RSPB and local supporters.

A tranquil haven with a comfortable and large hide. We were lucky enough to see a male hen harrier, which was the icing on the cake

The car park for RSPB Cottascarth is through a narrow road around the back of a local farm. From there, it is about 600 metres to the hide. It's impossible to do if you are a wheelchair user or have mobility issues. There is quite a steep hill going up from the car park, and it's very uneven.
Sadly, I'm unable to comment on the hide as I couldn't get to it.

Remote, but stunning location. The hide sits well in the landscape with a green roof. The hide is large and impressive, not like your usual hide. Lovely. It has binoculars and guide books you can use. We saw a kestrel and a hen harrier.

Small car parking area access through a farmyard. Long walk to the hide, which seems luxurious beyond what’s necessary. No birds of interest when we visited. Notice on the back of the door where few people will see it says it was Lottery and EU Development Fund money, so that explains why it’s so luxurious. No toilets.

I have visited a number of RSPB sites on my travels throughout Scotland, and I will say without fear of contradiction that this hide is the best I have seen so far.
Located in Cottascarth Orkney, a 25 minute drive northwest of Kirkwall.
You will pass through a working Farm to reach the parking area for the hide, Respect this, as you will be scrutinised by the many curious sheep on your walk. It’s a short flat 10-15 minute walk to the hide.
My suggestion is bring a thermos of hot beverage of your choice, a sandwich, and keep your eye open for some of the fascinating species that inhabit this area.

Brilliant hide. Very comfortable but might be short of any bird activity at any one time. However, give it time and you might to see the harriers or other raptors. Need more places like this.

I went today the date being the 1st of July 2021. Its the second most well built hide i have ever been in, Burton Mere being the poshest . Having said that the hide only seemed to have sash windows at one end . The other panes were none openable . But we did see both a female and male Hen Harrier, so that was a result . Though my camera skills were not up to the job considering how close the male was to the hide
