Bolsover Castle has a special place in my heart as I held my Wedding here! Sadly they don't do Weddings anymore but we decided it was time to bring the children along to show them where their parents were married. Part of the castle is in ruins, which adds to the atmosphere (and makes good wedding photos) and although the centrepiece, the Little Castle, has barely any furniture except in the Star Chamber (great Wedding room) there are several outstanding painted ceilings. We had great fun recreating our wedding photos and even if you are not visiting for the same reason as us, there is plenty here to justify a visit. It was great to remind ourselves of the history of the castle and enjoy walking around the grounds. There is an entry fee but free to English Heritage members.

Beautiful place to visit, the grounds are extremely well kept. There's a cafe to grab some refreshments, outside sitting, play area for children and the castle it's self is like a maze. Has loads of little rooms going of in all directions. Definitely worth a visit and it's free if your a member of English heritage. (£6 p/m for a single applicant)

Interesting castle with both ruins and survived parts, so you can get inside and check beautiful rooms. Garden is also beautiful. They sell books there (you need to enter with the ticket) and they also have a nice souvenir shop. They sell good mead! Recommended to visit.

I visited with my dog on a term day so it was quiet and peaceful. The cloudy skies suited the castle and gave it a moodiness. The English heritage staff in the shop and cafe couldn’t have been kinder or friendlier! As a member it was much appreciated. The castle is fabulous and the grounds/gardens beautifully kept. Children would love it playing at knights and using their imaginations. I followed the brown signs to the car park rather than the satnav. One space left on a quiet day.

Ruins, plus marvelous intact castle in a stunning location with wall walk around the garden, nice play area, cafe (that hot beef sandwich and pastie were superb) and panoramic views. Loved it.
Note - following the brown road signs takes you up to a car park marked "Bolsover Castle". Not many spaces there but an arrow directs you to "additional spaces". This is actually just round the bend, same side as the first car park, and is simply some space either side of what looks like a redundant drive up to closed castle gates. We only saw this after parking on the street nearby and walking back to the castle. Not clearly marked at all. Neither is the way in to the site. (It is on the bend.) We visited on a term-time weekday so not many visitors. I suspect parking would be a problem at busy times.

Excellent place to visit if you like Jacobean and English Civil War history, dressage, good views and insights into development of the stately home in England. It's not a 'castle' ( it's a palace, really), although it's built on the site of an older castle. It's a flagship English Heritage location, meaning a) it's dear to get in(£ 14.50 or so, in Sept 2024) B) it's got a large cafe and toilets c) it's got a big shop.

An excellent place to take children, spaces to play and run around, old parts of the castle to explore . The main tower has plenty of stairs, rooms , some with nothing in and others with paintings on the wall and the ceiling. Very well worth yhe visit, plus if you are a member, show your membership card and there is 10% off every purchase!!!

An absolutely fascinating place to visit. Whilst there is not much by way of furnishings there it is more than made up by the interesting architecture of the buildings.
The guides were very informative and willing to answer questions put to them.
Would certainly make a return visit.
