Mark did a fantastic job of creating a two day itinerary that took us all over the Dumfries and Galloway area including several cemeteries and sites that are part of my ancestry, along with many
historical sites in the area. He was knowledgeable about the areas he took us to and gave us a fantastic tour. We would recommend Mark and Dumfies Tours to everyone.

As a Maxwell, I have dreamed visiting Dumfries! How lucky we were to have found Mark @ Dumfries Tours, who made what could have been a California tourist's day trip into the experience of a lifetime! Mark had done so much research of the Maxwell's and shared with us intimate stops, full of rich history we would have never known, as well as notable and glorious Castles, churches and even graveyards, all the while presenting us with detailed history (how do you remember all those dates) and important stories that made the tour literally come alive! Was it exciting and inspiring and awesome? YES! Will we remember this forever as a wonderful day? YES! ....but what we will never forget is the FUN that we had (the laughter, the lunch with delicious food and did we mention the whiskey Stops for coffee and ice cream! And even chats with his mates!) and most importantly, the friend we made -who felt like family! He is a lovely guy -we just can't say enough about him and on our next trip to Scotland we will go to see him first!

I was on the Galloway Cycling Whiskey & Burns tour that included a day with Mark from Dumfries Tours for an exceptional historical tour through the Nith Valley, Ellisland Farm where Robert Burns wrote many of his works, a walking tour of Dumfries, it’s historical plaques, Burns Mausoleum at St Michaels church, then lunch at Loch Arthur (delicious plus a fresh food grocery), New Abbey, along the Solway coast into Carsethorn, Sandyhills, Rockcliffe, Kippfor, Dalbeattie and a stop at the birthplace (now museum) of John Paul Jones. Mark is a wealth of knowledge on the area and a friendly person to spend the day with on tour, thank you Mark!

Mark is an excellent guide with deep knowledge of Scotland. He showed us so many things we would have missed if we’d tried to tour on our own. Days later and we are still chatting about his wit and the many beautiful things we saw.

If you're looking for a tour to inform you about the history of Dumfries and it's families, or if you're wanting a personal tour of this beautiful part of Scotland, you cannot find anyone better than Mark with Dumfries Tours. We just returned from our trip to Scotland. Now here we are, days later, and I'm still marveling over what an incredible day it was! Mark was able to tell me things about my ancestors that I didn't know, and fill in the gaps on things I did know. His diligence and knowledge were beyond my expectations, and I am so thankful that we stumbled upon his site. He knows the Dumfries area like the back of his hand, and took us places that I'm sure no other tours visit. A special highlight was traveling to the Terregles Queir, where we were spellbound by the encyclopedic knowledge of the local historian, Muir Hunter. In addition, our stop for lunch at The Boathouse was delightful and delicious. My only regret is that I wish we'd had more time for another day. Thank you, Mark!

Mark Donald is an absolutely amazing tour guide. I reached out to him as his site contained family genealogy tours. I wanted to see the farms and towns my ancestors emigrated from almost 200 years ago. What Mark delivered was exactly what I wanted, and even exceeded all my expectations. We were in communication for over a year, as I discovered new place names in old family papers. Mark found every location - most of them long abandoned farms in very remote locations. To stand in the ruins of the farm my fourth great grandfather lived and died in, and see his gravestone, is an experience I won't soon forget. Because of Mark, I got a real sense of the homeland of my ancestors, and was very moved by the whole experience. Mark was able to organize all those site visits, AND include my request to see works of world-famous landscape artist Andy Goldsworthy in the Dumfriesshire countryside. The artist's love of the landscape informed my understanding of the history and majesty of the region. He avoided castles for me (not a fan), and included an astonishing surprise that I won't give away in case you plan to visit the Glendinning area. My daughter and I had a wonderful time. I now know, in my bones, where I came from. It was a very rich, rewarding, and inspiring experience. A heartfelt thank you to you Mark. If you want a guide in the Dumfries area - hire him!

We had an awesome tour with Mark! I highly recommend him as a knowledgeable tour guide. He tailored our day to information and sights related to the Maxwell clan while taking us to beautiful places and showing us his amazing corner of Scotland. He was quick to communicate and very professional.
