A friend and I had an afternoon out (25.10.24)with John from Shrike Birding tours.
First was the Nene Washes in Cambridgeshire where we were hoping for Short-eared and Long-eared Owls, sadly John couldn’t find any using his thermal imaging camera but it wasn’t for want of trying.
A group of Whooper swans was nice and lots of other water birds and it’s always good to see a Marsh Harrier.
John then took us to Willow Tree fen in Lincolnshire.
This is a well know reserve for Common Crane and it didn’t disappoint with 36 individuals coming in to roost, great experience. Other highlights were over 20 Marsh Harrier’s, Merlin, buzzard, kestrel and Sparrowhawk and a very showy Barn Owl also up to 9 Cattle Egret.
As always, John, thanks again for a great afternoon’s birding.

Had an awesome day with John around Derbyshire & the Peak District, looking for (& mostly finding !!) a variety of birds that I wanted to photograph in the area. John really knows his stuff & was great at spotting birds that I would not have seen at all. Managed to photograph five "New" species for my Lifetime List, & I couldn't be more pleased. Definitely looking to do another day with John soon! Highly recommended !! 👍😁

Excellent experience with Shrike Birding and John at Eldernell. Very cold, but sunny weather meant we had good birding, with views of long eared owls, marsh harriers, fieldfare and redwings, cranes and whoopers plus lots of others…..42 species in all. John was very knowledgeable and helpful in pointing out the birds and setting up the scope so we could get an even better view. Very good value for money, with a four hour bird packed afternoon, personal attention plus a spectacular sunset!

John led a half day bird tour for three of my friends and me to The Nene Washes. We spent a couple of hours at Eldernell Reserve, walking along the ridge (only a few hundred metres but we took our time!) and looking across the fen. We were rewarded with two hobbies, red kites, kestrel, crane (apparently, I missed it!), kingfisher, marsh harrier and lots more. Also a great view of hares and a beautiful roe deer.

After our stroll at Eldernell we drove a short distance to another spot, where a bittern flew across right infront of us. Proper widescreen, imax 3D bittern! A few minutes later it flew back! It was my first (and still only) bittern, and I was absolutely thrilled to get such an amazing view.

We all had a fabulous morning, which far exceeded my expectations. John was a superb guide - he clearly knows the best locations and kept us entertained throughout with his humour and in-depth knowledge of the birds around us.

I highly recommend a tour with Shrike Birding Tours. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced birder, John will look after you and ensure you’ll have a rewarding birdwatching experience.

Great day out with Shrike Birding Tours in the peaks and moors of Derbyshire and Staffordshire today. Kingfisher, Dipper, Hawfinch, Red Grouse and superb male Hen Harrier among the many highlights of the day. Lovely scenery, knowledgeable guide, lots of wildlife. Can’t wait for the next one !! Now where next?
