The Divinity School in Oxford is an extraordinary example of medieval architecture, dating back to the 15th century. It’s known for its stunning vaulted ceiling and intricate stonework. Although I didn’t go inside, visitors can explore this historic site by paying an entrance fee. The Divinity School is one of Oxford’s oldest university buildings and offers a remarkable glimpse into the university’s rich past. It’s also famous for its connection to the Harry Potter films, where it was used as the Hogwarts Infirmary and the location for Professor McGonagall’s dance lesson in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

A lot of the schools were not available to visit, unfortunately, as there were exams in progress.
This , however, was .
Not a disappointment.
Such beautiful stonework.
Such history.
The past becomes far more real and palpable in a room like this.

Amazing room. The ceiling is incredible. Really beautiful. I feel I have to mention it is a Harry Potter movie location but that is the very least of how lovely this place is

The Divinity School is one of the most beautiful places in Oxford – no easy task in a city that is packed with gorgeous spots. Ornately decorated with an intricate ceiling and light streaming through the windows – it’s a must for any visit to the city.
Tucked away inside the Bodleian Library, the main research library of the university, the Divinity School sits opposite the Sheldonian Theatre and featured in the Harry Potter films.
Divinity School’s intricate gothic vaulted ceiling is best recognised from Harry Potter. It served as Hogwarts Infirmary in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Amazing place, not only because of its architecture, but also because the Divinity School was used as Hospital Wing in Harry Potter movies. I could almost see there Harry, Hermiona, Dumbledore and other characters. 🙂 I certainly recommend buying tickets in advance.

I did enjoy the architecture inside. Some people finds this place just an empty place. But if you put on detail, you can sit down and enjoy the moment of enjoying the latest gothic architecture.
You may see the difference of detail of the pattern at the top. It is very interesting.
So, it is still nice to see , even you may need only like 5-10mins.

Unbelievable ceiling with so many details and spectacular architecture all around. Photos don’t do it justice. You have to pay around £2 per person to visit though and it’s actually not as big a room as you might think.

The Divinity School is a medieval building and room in the Perpendicular style in Oxford, , part of the University of Oxford. Built between 1427 and 1483, it is the oldest surviving purpose-built building for university use, specifically for lectures, oral exams and discussions on theology. It is no longer used for this purpose, although Oxford does offer degrees in Theology and Religion taught by its Faculty of Theology and Religion.
The ceiling consists of very elaborate lierne vaulting with bosses (455 of them), designed by William Orchard in the 1480s.
The building is physically attached to the Bodleian Library (with Duke Humfrey's Library on the first floor above it), and is opposite the Sheldonian Theatre where students matriculate and graduate. At the far end from the Bodleian Library entrance, a door leads to Convocation House
You may recognize the Divinity School’s classic gothic vaulted ceiling from Harry Potter movie which served as Hogwarts Infirmary. The ceiling consists of very elaborate four hundred and fifty five sculptural roof-bosses with four hanging pendants in each bay,. Its sandy coloured walls are made from stone from quarries in Taynton and from Headington. The hall-like room is well lighted due to the vertical windows with their opaque glass panes.
The Divinity School is full of symbols and representations of ideas and of people and its architecture is therefore an important indicator of the changing attitudes and beliefs of society throughout its life.
